Course Review

I loved this class! It was a real eye opener of what to expect if i still want to go through with design. Which I do! I have a lot to learn, but I'm eager! It was a nice balance between learning and projects. I really appreciated the kids who came in to talk with us about the program and life after school.

Let's just say, that I am excited to learn more!

Reflection: I really felt that, as our team combined, we did the best we could do! None of us had the technology for mock-ups on the computer. But with all our knowledge combined, I feel we achieved what we wanted to get through to the class. I did the sketches that were in the slide, and others worked on the slides mostly. At first, we were all kind of bumping heads on what idea to get through to the class, but we all really came together towards the end and pushed out the project.


In the beginning, I got the ball rolling asking questions and then we moved to more realistic ideas and little conversation like that. We were going a completely different direction in the beginning with a lamp/flashlight idea. Then Catalina drew up a design of a appetizer tray.

We all voted on what we liked most, and we chose the appetizer tray, which was good! Especially since another team had a very similar idea.

I feel like we all did very well working together. We all felt comfortable enough to question others ideas, and still not be too negative on our partners. I feel like that was really important. 






* I included JO9 too because, I was going to do it on the day it was due. But my car decided not to start in the West Campus Parking Lot... so I was stuck for a bit wallowing in my car.

All of these combined decides whether a design can make it or break it.
The need for designers will always be there. With new ideas, especially with eco-friendly ideas, we need new designers with the knowledge to make these better designs. Maybe one day that person will be me!

Our team has worked well together, but we've come up with a lot of ideas. Which of course is good, but today we really cracked down and got things down. We have all our ideas down and what we are ready to do, and work on till we all meet again on Wednesday.
The "idea ball" started rolling when Catalina offered the idea of a shamrock serving tray. After that we all combined ideas for a simpler design that could be used year round.
With everyone stating their ideas there was a little tension at first since we were all trying to get everyone's ideas. But now were better and are ready to make slide show and everything!
I've been the one drawing the ideas and concepts, and I really enjoy doing that!

I was like a little girl in the candy store in this class.
It got me so psyched to apply for design! Still not sure exactly what area of design. But the comment made by one of the presenters, made me think of sticking with visual. He said that you basically can dabble in any area of design.
I really liked the the slide show, it really helped me see what is possible, and what I can strive to do.

Plus, it really helped that my team won the challenge! I grew up doing those kinds of tasks in Destination Imagination. Building towers and using balloons, spaghetti, string etc.

It sorta blew my mind that for 4 years of my life growing up, being with friends, working together and building things in Destination Imagination...
That I would want to do that for the rest of my life!

Legal Issues in Design

Can't believe it didn't load correctly. But here it is at least I got it in.

The best example I can think of when I think of legal issues and design is the artist Pogo. His remixes are known all throughout the Youtube world, and his songs can easily be purchased on his website http://www.pogomix.net/about-me/. Well, not necessarily purchased more, just downloading. With Pogo’s music, it’s free, or used to be free. Now he has a “Name Your Price”. But before this young guy was found by the big corporations of Disney and Pixar, his music had to be sold as “free”.

            Nick Bertke and his Youtube alias Pogo’s music is compiled using chords and vocals from the films he remixes. For example, “Alice and Wonderland” you can hear Alice’s voice in the majority of the song. The underlying beat of the song gives it that “I can’t look away from the screen, it’s like crack on Youtube” face that makes you come back and want to show all your friends.

Another issue I see, and only see on the internet, is Tumblr’s famous “reblog” button. A big issue I see with that is artist who post their art work on the website, are not being credited with their work. Once a post is made, anyone can reblog and edit out information from the user before. Then the easy possibility of copy and paste into a completely new post is possible. I’m pretty sure that somewhere down the line I am guilty of of this. And many other people are exactly like me.

 This video helps to explain, in more detail then the other videos I posted, of the legal issues that go into design. It gives the layouts of a contract and goes into further details of pantents. 

Sticking with web designing, http://websitetips.com/business/legal/, helps give tips for companies that are making a website. It gives information such as Web design contracts, Web site copyright protection and copyright laws, what to do about copyright infringement, intellectual property laws, trademarks and trademark protection, Internet law, Internet fraud, and Internet law firms, intellectual property lawyers, and related attorneys.

A book can also give information. Yes, they still exist! Books!

Reading Reflection 06

I really enjoy this book so far. It points out how much we waste and it really makes you think of how much you contribute to this doing. We, as humans, don't think of how we are hurting the environment and we should take it into account now before it's too late.
I really enjoyed the example of the ants. As a kid growing up, I would watch ants carry a giant leaf on it's back on the side-walk, into the grass and back to where it has made it's home. There are much more ants then humans, and they contribute to better the environment around them, not only themselves. We as humans, should think more like them.
We don't need to go back in time to fix what we've already ruined. We need to move forward, with the technological advances we have to make better products, to help not only us, but the environment in which we live.

Course Review 06

This class was very interesting to me. I really enjoyed the documentary we watched. I've heard my friends talk about "Girl Talk" before, but I never really listened to him till this film. I've always enjoyed remixes of songs new and old, and found it interesting what legal issues went into it.
I also remember hearing about the man who would draw Mickey Mouse, and never really thought that it was that bad. I feel that big corporations are more into it for the money then people think. Of course there are the real people out there that believe that what people make is truly good.
I don't mean to keep going back to the kid on Youtube making the videos, but he's a great example.
At first he was making the remixes of the classic Disney movies for fun. But once Disney saw, they made it that all the music he made was only sold as "free" and he could not get paid. Soon after, he was picked up from Disney and Pixar and also works for many other companies.
This just shows what a little experimentation can do!

Course Reflection

I never thought that there was more to colors then really what we learned in art class in maybe, something like high school.
We have the classic colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indogo and violet. But once we learned how much of it influenced our culture and what not. Blew my mind.
The new term I used was Chroma, and I already knew saturation, since I use it in photography so much!
Because it's so true!

McDonald's red and what not. Examples like that!

Sustainability is especially important, making a product last long totally affects the culture of the item and how people use it. Specially items that are made to be eco-friendly! Always better, when it is in fact really truely eco-friendly!

Reading Reflection

First off, I enjoy the book because it's water proof.
I can't tell you how many times I've ran it through the sink water to show my friends.
So far, I really enjoy the book. It's an easy read so it'll fly by.
I'm not the perfect recycler, nor will I ever me! This book is a total guilt trip towards striving to make the enviroment a better place, when in fact also stating that we can't.
But the fact that Japan and other places around the world are able to design living off land is amazing. It shows how much we americans need to learn to be able to reconnect again in a healthy enviromental way.
This book reminds me "Impact Man" by Colin Beaven. A great documentary as well!

Journal 05

My journey...

1.     Made a list of things for making tacos for dinner tonight, yumm

2.     Get in my car to drive to Giant Eagle

3.     Roads seem to be fine after the bog storm and all

4.     Stop at that freaking light, hate this light…

5.     Drive down a bit to Giant Eagle and turn in after letting all the slowww cars pass

6.     Pull into a parking spot

7.     Walk towards Giant Eagle and go through the sliding doors

8.     Grab a cart that’s to my right , it’s by the discount food that never looks touched

9.     Wipe off the cart with disinfectant wipe, can never be to safe

10.  Enter into the store, Starbucks is to my left, always so tempting

11. Overcome temptation and move on

12.  I arrive at the make-your-own salad and veggie/fruit part of the store

13. Go over to the salad section

14. Grabbed a bag of spinach from the salad section, I love spinach

15. Giggle to myself thinking of Popeye

16.  Go over to the oranges, one of my favorite colors

17.  I don’t use plastic bags so I grab three oranges and put them into the top of the cart

18. Grab some Mandarin oranges

19. Walk towards the northeast side… just kidding I don’t know my directions, so I went to the back of the store

20.  Go to the meat aisle and find ground turkey

21.  On the opposite side of the meat aisle (I would say wall, but meat wall sounds creepy) are the drinks

22.  I adore, I mean love lemonade, 2 bottles please in my cart

23.  In the aisle two away from the drinks are the chips, lets head over there next

24.  Chips for salsa, Scoops are the best

Scanvenger Hunt

To start off our journey we first headed towards the Wexner Center. We thought that staying in the group, since I'm not really familiar with the campus, would be the best idea. We had out smart phones to figure out the rest of the clues on our little adventure. I brought the camera, a Nikon D5000, to take the pictures at each location.

The Barcelona Chair was designed by Miles van der Rohe. The chair was created in 1929 for the Internation al Exposition. I find it amazing that such a futuristic design was made in the late '20s!

This car was designed by Le Curbusier. He called this chair 'rest machine' and this chair was the only chair that he personally worked on. I am attempting to read The Wallpaper 'Next Generation'.

The Wexner Center was the first major public building that was designed by Eisenman.

The layering of the brick gave the buildings that Johnson designed, character. This allowed the bricks to blend well with the other surrounding brick buildings. 

Trying to stay warm! This buildings design team was chosen in 1910 through on architectural competition.

Course Reflection 04

Accessibility is important when it comes to anything that is made/designed today. In a world that is becoming more and more aware of others needs, how we use the power that we are discovering, is important.
I really liked the lecture because I could really identify with disabilities. In high school, I worked with a lot of special needs kids, and they're needs were different then ours. I want to help to make things more accessible, and that is why I am leaning more and more to architectural or even space design.
Little things like the rafts that go on the back of a kayak to keep it from tiping, I saw when we went kayaking on a feild trip last year. I want to be able to help.
If I was not trying to become a designer, I would become a special education teacher. And pursuing a design major allows me to maybe dip my feet in both areas.

Found Faces

Frank Lloyd Wright

I'm going to guess and say that you are going to be getting a lot of Wright posts, and for that, I am sorry.
I commute from home and also go to the Delaware Center. I'm working on finding balanced time for each my classes, and I am getting there. So I have yet to be able to go the library rather, I am doing my study online, just so ya know.
Ok, here it is now:

Wright was an architect, interior designer, writer and educator. Wowza, doing all that I would be exhausted. But rather then all that he also designed more then 1,000 projects, with resulted in 500 complete works. He promoted organic architecture, lead a movement in architecture called the Prairie school and made the concept of the Usonian home.

The organic architecture can be found in his work Falling Water.

The home was built partly over a waterfall on Bear Run in the Mill Run section in the Laurel Highlands of the Allegheny Mountains.

The house is listed on the Smithsonian’s Life List of 28 places “to visit before you die”. It was designated as a historical landmark in 1966.

The work was started in 1936, and when looking at this house, it seems almost futuristic, and the idea of it being built in the 30’s rather then the now, is astonishing! Even more astonishing is the cost! The grand total of the home cost a total of $155, 000.

The Prairie movement as exampled by his works Robie House, the Darwin D. Martin house and the Westcott House. The Prairie School architectural design became wildly known and used in the late 19^th century and early 20^th century in the Midwest United States. The work is described by having flat horizontal lines, or hipped rooks with broad overhanging eaves, grouped horizontal windows, integrated with the landscape, solid construction, craftsmanship and discipline. The horizontal lines where thought to resemble a prairie style-like landscape.

This is a picture of the Robie House built between 1908 and 1910. The home is located in Chicago’s Hyde Park at 5757 S. Woodlawn Avenue on the South Side. The home was made into a National Landmark in 1963. The home is a perfect example of Prairie home architecture, As Wright wrote in 1910, "it is quite impossible to consider the building one thing and its furnishings another. ... They are all mere structural details of its character and completeness.” Every element Wright designed is meant to be thought of as part of the larger artistic idea of the house.

The home was called the “measuring stick” against all other Prairie School buildings are compared. The significance of the style can be stated in the 1957 article in House and Home magazine:

"During the decades of eclecticism's triumph there were also many innovators--less heralded than the fashionable practitioners, but exerting more lasting influence. Of these innovators, none could rival Frank Lloyd Wright. By any standard his Robie house was the House of the 1900s--indeed the House of the Century."]

Above all else, the Robie house is a magnificent work of art. But, in addition, the house introduced so many concepts in planning and construction that its full influence cannot be measured accurately for many years to come. Without this house, much of modern architecture as we know it today might not exist."

Usonian Homes designed by Wright were typically small, single story dwellings without a garage or much storage. A strong visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces is an important quality. When speaking about coining the term Usonia:

"But why this term "America" has become representative as the name of these United States at home and abroad is past recall. Samuel Butler fitted us with a good name. He called us Usonians, and our Nation of combined States, Usonia."

Wright’s work was ground breaking in his time. The clean lines and organized style led to visual appeal and cost cuts. Which in that time was a major plus. His work influenced many, and was the ground to many new designs. I enjoy the Prairie School look because we see a lot of that style in Columbus! I guess Midwest is the best! The idea that he dabbed his foot in many areas of design really influences me to not only focus on one area, and rather focus on several ideas. 

Olivier Mourgue

Oliver Mourgue is best known for his futuristic designs with a focus on furniture, but he is also a painter and landscape designer. He published a book which is called "Imaginary and Gardens and Little Theaters" for the Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts. 

He studied interior design at the "Ecole Boulle" and furniture design at "L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs' (Little longer name then OSU...) in Paris. 

On of his greatest pieces is the "Djinn" chair. After working with the french manufacturer "Airborne International" he designed the chair, which was made famous by '2001: A Space Oddesey' by Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick created the futuristic rotating Hilton hotel in Space. The chair then has the smooth, wave-like, low-slung silhouette. The chair is named after a Muslim Legend, a spirit often capable of assuming human or animal form and exercising supernatural influence over people".
